If you have dreams of being on a game show and getting all the glory, grab a group and head over to GameOn ATX.
When I was growing up, I could not get enough of game shows. Wheel of Fortune is on TV? I’m in. The Price is Right is nearby? Let’s do it. Even today, I’ll throw Family Feud on for what I think is just a couple of minutes, and four hours later, I’m yelling at my screen just like Steve Harvey is berating contestants for bonkers answers that eventually turn out to be correct.
Getting to appear on a game show seems like such a delightful time. Unfortunately, many shows require traveling to California (or Ireland, in the case of FOX’s new hit, The Floor) and often ask for some kind of audition, whether a video, form, or six-page essay on how you’re smarter than a fifth grader.
Luckily for folks in the Austin area, there’s a wonderful solution: GameOn ATX. This spot puts you in an immersive game show experience, from festive music to an enthusiastic host to all the pressure that comes when you’re staring someone down from across the buzzer.
My group had 14 participants, though you can play with anywhere between 6 and 44 people. We were split into two teams and asked to come up with names. Our opponents were probably a bit more creative, opting for a sultry superhero theme. What we lacked in naming skills, we more than made up for with our game show performance, cruising to an easy victory. They don’t hand out an MVP award, though, humbly, I would have won it.

GameOn is planning to add a few other options to its menu. For now, you’ll get to hop into three games:
- Survey Squabble: 100 people get polled about a specific question, and your team goes one by one, sharing potential answers. Three strikes and the other team gets a chance to steal. It’s the same format as Family Feud, though there’s a final bonus round that’s a bit of a twist on the classic.
- Whirly Words: We don’t have Pat Sajak and Vanna White, but we don’t need ’em. You spin a gigantic wheel and pick a letter to try and help your team solve the puzzle. We were fortunate that the other team kept landing on spots that skipped their turn or removed a chunk of points. The wheel can be kind, and it can be quite cruel, too.
- Cosmic Drop: If your dream is to play Plinko (without having to know the value of certain household items), GameOn ATX delivers with its final board. You drop two oversized plastic chips and try to score big points. I got a zero with one of my chips, but thankfully I scored the maximum 500 with the other to even things out a bit.
Other Details about GameOn ATX
GameOn ATX has two different rooms, one for 6-14 people and another for larger groups of 15 or more. The smaller room is BYOB; you can still bring drinks in the larger one, but you’ll have an audience and can bring food, too.
You can also tailor the questions and puzzles to your group. If you have kids playing, you can keep it more PG, while an adult-only group can ratchet up the sizzle.
In the wrong hands, this whole vibe could be something on par with the Willy Wonka Experience in Glasgow. But GameOn ATX really puts in the effort. The sets are well-constructed and feel like a game show atmosphere, and the host is friendly and engaging without being too over-the-top or offputting. He did a nice job explaining and keeping things moving, which are essential traits for any host. There’s also a producer ensuring lighting and sound cues go off without a hitch, and they’re pretty delightful.
The next time you get an urge to appear on a classic vintage game show, give GameOn ATX a try. You might not win thousands of dollars, but you’ll make some special memories along the way. And that’s a priceless gift, aww.
